Peter Gabriel’s landmark album So served as a good example of the Alva’s smooth character and ability to engage me emotionally. Classic tracks such as “Red Rain,” “Mercy Street,” and “In Your Eyes” came across on a big sound stage with solid imaging. Gabriel’s orchestral accompaniments on those tracks were warm, smooth, and free of any harshness. That character was reinforced on every song on Fairground Attraction’s album The First of a Million Kisses, and with Harry Belafonte’s and Nana Mouskouri’s An Evening with Belafonte/Mouskouri: Songs from Greece.

Paired with the massive RBH SVTR Tower Reference Speakers, piano notes on “Mia and Sebastian’s Theme” from La La Land, and Norah Jones’ “Don’t Know Why” resonated with realistic breadth and depth. Piano can reveal a great deal of any audio component’s competence.

As I mentioned, the only downside I noted here were times where I longed for a bit more oomph out of percussive instruments on tracks such Sade’s “Smooth Operator;” Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer;”  “Imagine the Fire,” from the Dark Knight Rises soundtrack; and “The Greatest Show,” from The Greatest Showman soundtrack.
