Cloud-based enterprise laptop backup player lands venture funding

Druva, a 4-year-old provider of enterprise laptop backup and retrieval products and services, has received $12 million in venture funding, the company announced last week.

The funding round was led by Nexus Venture Partners. Sequoia Capital, an existing investor in Druva, also participated in the round.

Druva's flagship product, inSync, is designed to offer enterprise laptop backup for both office and remote users. The company says its use of "global source-based data deduplication" allows it to save a single copy of content duplicated across users, resulting in 10 times faster backup and a 90% reduction in bandwidth and storage.

The inSync platform provides users with one-click data access over PCs, web browsers, smartphones and tablets.

"As the explosion of data continues, and so does proliferation of endpoint device types and the mobility of the workforce, Druva has demonstrated a unique capability to address the challenges associated with enterprise backup and endpoint data protection," Jishnu Bhattacharjee, a principal at Nexus Venture Partners, said in a statement.

Druva was founded in 2007 by Veritas Software alumni Jaspreet Singh (now CEO), Ramani Kothandaraman (COO) and Milind Borate (CTO).

The company has offices in the U.S., London and India and claims more than 750 customers in 26 countries and 300,000 protected endpoints globally.

Among Druva's customers are NASA, Xerox, Bechtel, Harvard University, KPMG and MetLife.

In addition to the inSync remote laptop backup, Druva also offers a local and remote server backup called Phoenix, which can be used with Windows servers and Linux servers.
