The Galaxy S6 and its curvy cousin Edge are among this year’s hottest phones. The Verizon editions are getting their first update, and there’s several goodies that are included. Many other phones and tablets also scored some Lollipop this week, so let’s tackle the rest of those updates.
Each week we compile all the major software updates for the biggest devices, including phones and tablets on U.S. carriers, unlocked phones, and Android Wear watches. Making sure your device is running the latest available software is a good housekeeping practice, ensuring you have the latest features with fewer bugs and gaping security holes.
Galaxy S6, S6 Edge: The Verizon support page for Samsung’s flagship phones doesn’t list one standout feature, but it promises a lot of little fixes and new features. The built-in photo editor app now has a drawing mode in case you ever feel like doodling. There are also improvements to the dialer, such as an emergency call button and improved voice performance.
LG G Pad 10.1 LTE: It’s your turn for Android Lollipop. Verizon’s update page details all the Material Design and other goodies that come with Android 5.0.2. The tablet of course carries LG’s interface overlay, but it’s a rather minimal skin.
Xperia Z3: This update finally brings Android Lollipop and enables access to band 12, which is 70MHz spectrum that T-Mobile recently purchases for LTE. The T-Mobile support page for this update is live, so the new software should be on its way to your device soon.
Galaxy Tab S 10.5: You’re finally getting Lollipop in the form of Android 5.0.2. The details are on Samsung’s support site, which specifies all the new features in Lollipop. The over-the-air update should hit your tablet anytime.
Z Series: Here comes another massive batch of updates to Sony’s smartphones and tablets. Sony says Android 5.0 is already on the way to the Xperia Z, Z1, Z2, and Z3. The Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia C3 are going all the way up to Android 5.1, though that’s not going to begin until July. Sony also pledged to update the Xperia M2 and M2 Aqua to Android 5.1, but didn’t offer a timeline for when that would happen.
